Some Experiments in Smelting

I built a small aluminum smelter and have been experimenting with melting down old cans and scrap metal. so far it’s not the easiest process, I still need to work out some kinks and issues. Here are a couple videos on the project so far, I plan on doing more soon.

In 1972 I worked for New England Fish Co in Sand Point Alaska. Some lads and myself took a skiff over to the old town of Unga one sunny afternoon and ended up at the end of the bay and hiked up to the old mine site. The place appeared pretty much untouched. A model T truck was sitting in the remains of the old stamp mill and the little 0-6-0 locomotive that led me to this web site was sitting upright, not a bullet hole in it. I always wondered what had happened to it. Some the remains at the headwaters of the bay were very interesting. The old compressor house with two 15 foot diameter under shot peloton wheel open side arm compressors was mostly intact. The foundation for a large air storage tank remained but the tank itself had been removed by the navy during WW2 for use as a mooring buoy. A large high pressure pipe ran up the hill to the mine site. The compressors were fed by a 18 inch riveted pipe which came from a dam up the canyon from the mine. I recovered a couple of intact battery jars which I still have. One of our party found the ingot stamp with Appolo in mirror on it. Quite a place
